Landileigh Nelson is a perfect example of the fact that diabetes activists/advocates come in all shapes, sizes, ages and genders. She was diagnosed first with diabetes (Type Other) after having acute pancreatitis in July of 2007 at the age of 44. She is also living with Stage 4 Chronic Kidney Disease, Gastroparesis, and various other medical problems but none of that has slowed her down. Since being diagnosed, she has made it her mission to speak out and educate people about forms of diabetes other than Type 1 and Type 2. Landileigh is well respected and recognized in the world of diabetes. She is a former administrator of TuDiabetes.com, a chat moderator at DiabetesTalkFest.com, and writes a regular blog about her life and living with diabetes at landileigh.com.Landileigh and her husband of 21 years, Chuck, live in Northern California. Her 19 year old daughter, Holly, is currently attending culinary school to become a Baking and Pastry Chef specializing in sweets for diabetics. She has two cats, Ariel and Belle.
Claudine Bertani
Chief Financial Officercbertani(at)thediabetesresource(dot)comClaudine Bertani has been a long-time advocate for people with diabetes and deeply involved in the search for a cure. Having a parent with type 1 diabetes, Claudine has seen first-hand the impact of the disease on a loved one. My mom has had Type 1 diabetes for 40 years. As a child and teen, I was hardly aware that she even had diabetes but, once I hit my 20's, I started to see and feel its effects. My mom began to have kidney failure and was on dialysis for 3 years. These were some of the most difficult days for both of us, said Claudine. Since then, Claudine has helped her mother deal with 2 kidney transplants, one donated by Claudine's brother, and numerous other complications from diabetes ranging from retinopathy to neuropathy which has made it hard for her mother to walk without the assistance of a walker. Claudine had been active locally in various diabetes efforts and support groups and became involved with The Diabetes Resource because she believes that education and access to the proper resources will help slow down the progression of this lifelong disease for many people who desperately need as much information as they can get.
Claudine lives in New York with her husband Joe and two children, Francesca (9) and Joey (4).
